Feiten en achtergronden over het veiligheidshek bij Beit Jala

Onlangs werd ik opeens geconfronteerd met een schrijven van een collega met het verzoek een petitie te tekenen tegen de bouw van het Veiligheidshek
door Israël in de Vallei van Cremisan bij Bethlehem. Deze petitie is gestart door Vrienden van Sabeel Nederland en Kairos Palestina Nederland, twee "interkerkelijke bewegingen die stem geven aan Palestijnse christenen".
Ik begrijp werkelijk niet waarom kerkelijke instanties steeds maar weer menen te moeten opkomen voor ‘internationaal recht’. Alsof theologen juridische specialisten zijn. Alsof de kerk een politiek orgaan is. Schoenmaker blijf bij je leest. Sabeel en aanverwanten doen in mijn ogen niet anders dan de Bijbel voor hun eigen karretje spannen en dwaalleringen verkondigen.

Overigens heeft Israël ons echt niet nodig om recht te doen. Deze mensen kunnen gewoon naar de rechter stappen en worden daar gehoord ook:

• Archaeological findings and historical records demonstrate that Jews have lived continuously in the Land of Israel for the past 3500 years. The right of the Jews to self-determination was acknowledged by the international community already in the 18th and 19th centuries.
• World leaders such as Napoleon, as expressed in his letter to the Jewish people as "The Rightful Heirs of Palestine," and numerous American presidents, including John Adams and Abraham Lincoln, exemplified this recognition of the ties between the Jewish people and their homeland."
